When Andrea Franchetti decided that he was going to make wine, he didn’t know at all vineyard and cellar wine making practices. To fill this gap he left in the late ’80s for Bordeaux, to get acquainted with who was then the recognized as masters of world wine production. In addition to a considerable amount of experience, Franchetti brought back to Italy the imprinting to propose in Val d’Orcia that type of viticulture and, also, his first Bordeaux graft nurseries.
It is therefore not surprising that in 2001, wanting to plant a white berry vineyard in his Tenuta di Trinoro, he chose the semillon vine from which, in 2006, he obtained his first Bianco di Trinoro. The wine, whose first vintage marketed was the 2017, comes from a vine of just half a hectare, located in one of the highest points of the estate, at 600 meters above sea level, with a imponent planting density. The grapes, pressed in whole and fermented, gave rise to a must that remained to rest for a year, in contact with its yeasts, in cement tank. The wine obtained, with a circulation of just 2000 bottles, has then ended the aging, with another 8 months of bottle.
In the glass, this 2018 vintage (just the second official) has a rather pale straw yellow color, not especially consistent, due to a low alcohol content (12.5°). The initial scent is of vegetal notes, between straw and verbena, followed by very fresh yellow fruit (walnut and plum) while, in the background, emerge refreshing hints of citrine and minerals, with a slight hydrocarbon. In the mouth is evident the acidulous component of lime and cedar, combined with a good flavor and a more complex palate center of quince and honey, with a medium length finel on almond notes.
