Castell’in Villa is a small Tuscan village located in Felsina Berardenga from the province of Siena, in Chianti Classico area, originating from a small town of 13th century. Currently it is the seat of the homonymous company, purchased in 1967 by Riccardo Pignatelli della Leonessadeveloped (and guided for 30 years, after his death) by his wife Coralìa, who still resides in the tower of the village. The estate covers 300 hectares of which 44 are currently dedicated to viticulture (it had started with just one hectare), 27 to olive growing, 30 to arable land and 200 to secular woods.
Much of the myth of this estate is due to the famous reserves of the 70s and 80s, which immediately highlighted themselves, in the landscape of the most attentive Italian and foreign palates, for their finesse and elegance, definitely outstanding. Today, aware of this great legacy, Castell’in Villa continues its activity keeping to three precise watchwords, so that the magic of the origins does not disappear: “sangiovese”, “preserve” and “respect”.
Its Chianti Classico Riserva is produced entirely with sangiovese grapes, from the best vineyards, which ferments spontaneously under to the action of indigenous yeasts. Once assembled, the wine ages for about 3-4 years in large wooden barrels and then refine for another year in the bottle.
The 2013 vintage, with a beautiful ruby red color with light garnet nuances, smells of rose and violet, red cherry and sour cherry with hints of undergrowth, spices, karkadè and vinyl. The palate is immediately invaded by notes of iron and blood orange along with an important tannic texture and a refreshing acidity, which slims the sip, despite the great texture. The finish is very long, on ferrous, blood and citric notes.
