Castell’in villa lies in the homonymous burgh, known by 1200, in Felsina Berardenga sub-region of Chianti Classico, in the Province of Siena. Here Riccardo Pignatelli della Leonessa, in 1967, bought a 300 hectares land (with 54 of vineyards) to spend his retirement in peace, producing wine as a pastime in a basic cellar inside the village castle.
The History however took another direction because, since from the beginning, the wines came to the fore thanks to the extraordinary performances of the 70’s and 80’s Chianti Classico Riserva, true icons of finesse and elegance.
When Riccardo died, in 1985, his historical heritage was received by his Wife Coralìa who continues as yet producing wine which preserve their timeless iconicity.
Chianti Classico Poggio delle Rose is without a doubt the production top quality: it cames from Poggio delle Rose vineyard, a Cru at 350 meters above the sea level, composed of 30 years old Sangiovese cuttings.
Everithing start in the vine, with a first crucial selection of the most healthy grapes, then, in the cellar, happens the fermentation in refrigerated steel tanks. The long ageing, a winery signature, takes 2 years in small barrels of french oak, 1 in large barrels of Slavonian oak, and after bottling without filtration, 1 in bottle before marketing.
With an impenetrable ruby color and a great consistency, this 2006 vintage has a very broad olfactory impression and immediately conveys to the nose an idea of great aromatic concentration. Black cherry syrup, dark chocolate and Balkan Sobranie tobacco are the first nose impression, then come grenadine, blackberry and orange marmalade, rosehip, underbrush, black and pink pepper, vinyl and incense, and a final twist of licorice and light wood. In the mouth this masterpiece of balance explodes with amplitude, intensity, concentration, refined tannins and acidity perfecly balanced.
