Domaine Derain was born in Saint Aubin in 1988 from the hands of Dominique Derain, a name already famous for his collaborations in the cellars of several prestigious Cote de Beaune Domains. Recently Dominique sold the Domaine, but this wine was born when it was still firmly in the hands of Catherine Derain, in the vineyard, and Dominique in the cellar, and reflects their style, made of an accurate balance between elegance and rusticity.
The wine comes from a vineyard of 90 years of age, which naturally provides few concentrated bunches. Besides the 2012 vintage was characterized by vegetative difficulties in the first half of the season, producing even fewer bunches creating the conditions for further concentration.
These premises are confirmed by the great glyceric consistency that this 2012 vintage shows in the glass, however showing a very bright ruby color. The rustic side of the wine is characterized by a bouquet of red flowers in slight withering, mushroom undergrowth, black pepper in grains and hints of vinyl. These dark tones, however, slowly give way to a lively and crunchy red fruit (almost a black cherry granita) and hematic-ferrous hints. In the mouth it immediately affects its glyceric consistence which, however, shortly makes room for a balanced freshness and really smooth tannins, with a long and extremely elegant finish.
