Avignonesi winery was founded in 1974, by the homonymous family, in Valiano, in the province of Siena, in the production area of the Nobile di Montepulciano wine. Although the work of the property had been rich in satisfaction from the beginning, in 2009 it was decided to sell the winery to Virginie Saverys, a young Belgian lawyer who, after her legal successes, had moved to Tuscany in 2007.
The importance of this change is given by the fact that Virgine had the firm conviction of the superiority of organic and natural products. Animated by these convictions, she undertook to use, for her wines, biodynamic production guidelines, in order to create wines that, in addition to a faithfull reflection the authenticity and uniqueness of Montepulciano, were more healthy and digestible. Today, after a little more than a decade, Avignonesi extends over 180 hectares, since it makes it the largest Italian biodynamic winery, and is always led by Virgine, with the help of his daughter Eline, the oenologist Matteo Giustiniani (who is also the CEO) and the agronomist Alessio Gorini.
This Nobile di Montepulciano Poggetto di Sopra is the result of a collaboration project between 6 wineries in the area of Montepulciano (Salcheto, Poliziano, La Braccesca, Dei, Boscarelli and Avignonesi) called “Alleanza”. According to this project, each winery, with its oenologist, has engaged in the production of a Nobile di Montepulciano Cru, obtained exclusively from Sangiovese grapes (called in the area Prugnolo Gentile). Poggetto di Sopra comes from a vineyard cultivated without chemicals, with only biodynamic preparations and green manure between the rows, on clayey soil, poor in organic matter, permeated by a vein of blue sodic clays with alkaline pH. After the spontaneous alcoholic fermentation of the whole berries, with maceration on the skins for about a month, the wine is aged in small barrels (75%) and large ones (25%) for 2 years, before bottling and marketing.
This 2016 vintage, with a pale ruby color and little consistency, smells of cherry, blood orange, pomegranate, young tobacco, pink pepper, fruity undergrowth and empyreumatic touches. The mouthfeel is very fresh, with silky just whispered tannins, accompanying a return of the red fruits which go along for the entire sip, until a long sapid and thirst-quenching final.
