Elena Walch, one of the largest private wineries in South Tyrol, took its first steps in 1850 when was built a natural stone cellar obtained from the subsoil, which remained the same (with obvious modernizations) until 2015. Inside, it has always been possible to give birth to wines following a sustainable approach and respectful of nature, thanks, for example, to the reduction of the energy impact and the use of natural gravity. The same approach is run in the vineyards with operations ranging from the creation of organic compost to fertilize, to the growth of legumes between the rows.
Pinot Noir Ludwig comes from grapes grown in two particularly suitable parcels, located at a height of 400 and 580 meters above sea level, respectively facing west and east. In the cellar, the grapes, gently pressed, ferment partly in wood and partly in steel and then remain in contact with the skins for 10 days. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation in barriques, and then ages in them about 17 months.
This 2017 shiny and transparent ruby vintage smells opening on tones of blueberries, raspberries, pomegranate and sour cherry grenadine, and then spreads out on extract of cinchona, Sichuan pepper and underbrush, and ends on echoes of white incense and vinyl. The taste is striking first of all for its freshness, almost an electric shock to the taste buds, balanced by a good softness and a never excessive thirst-quenching sapid vein, which leads to a very long sour-fruity finish.
