In 2007 three friends winegrowers, Danilo Šnajder, Božidar Grabovac and Rajko Žličar, in the small village of Ormož, put together their land and their experiences to establish Verus winery. Verus in Latin means true, real, actual, as well as honest, genuine, unpretentious, fair, all adjectives that go well with the core principles of the 3 partners’ work.
Their 25 vineyards hectares lie in the eastern Slovenia, in the Styria region over 250 meters above sea level on hills with a steep slope (30-40%). The climate, influenced by the relative proximity of both the Alps and the Adriatic Sea, is cool but temperate with an excellent alternation cold/ hot throughout the day. The subsoil is mainly composed of Pliocene carbonate rock, while the soil varies from sandy and light (in the highest vineyards) to clay (in the lowest and flat ones). All the vineyards are cultivated according to the principles of ecological and sustainable agriculture, and most of the operations are manually carried out.
Their Riesling comes from vines over 30 years old, manually harvested, whose grapes were carefully placed in 12 kilos perforated bins, chilled and finally sent to the cellar in an air-conditioned, temperature controlled vehicle. In the cellar the pressed grapes were left briefly in contact with oxygen before developing fermentation in stainless steel tanks, over three weeks, being racked, filtered and finally bottled.
This intense straw yellow 2018 vintage smells of peach, yellow plums, lime zest, white flowers bouquet, with hints of thyme and basil. The taste is initially refreshing, with a pleasant return of the fruity component in the center-palate, accompanied by a good flavor and iodine hints that also constitute the gustatory sensation on which the wine closes, with a discreet length.
